The premise

Echo on the Water

Isa Werner accused of assault

At sunset the surface of the Black Lake showed an echo: the boathouse pier, a man in a travelling cloak, and Isa Werner pushing him in the back. Twenty students and two magisters saw it. It lasted four seconds.

The man in the cloak is Bram Holt, a debt collector for the Lower Court. He lies in the Infirmary with a broken arm and says Isa pushed him into the lake over her family’s debt letter.

Isa is confined to your room until the disciplinary council. “I know you believe her,” says Dean Olv. “The council doesn’t care. The council needs someone to explain what the water showed. By six.”

Cast

Isa Werner

Isa Werner

your roommate, third year · suspect

She was on the pier, pushed Bram away and left. Denies nothing except what she didn’t do. Twice this year her name has been in a case — and twice you stand between her and the council.

Bram Holt

debt collector for the Lower Court · suspect

Came “for a signature,” lies there with a broken arm and tells his version to everyone who comes in. Drinks Lower Court liqueur and won’t admit it.

Lys Ravel

Lys Ravel

senior student · suspect

She has been forbidden to go near the lake. She goes anyway. Her salt circle pulls any memory by the water to the surface — not only the one she calls.

Magister Veda Orn

Department of Remembrance

Took over the department after Hale: dry, quick, with no tenderness for the lake. Can read an imprint in a bowl of water and never confuses perception with fact.

Ors Cade

Ors Cade

boatman

Heard shouting, laughter and one blow with no splash. Didn’t go to look — and now thinks he should have.

Healer Od

Healer Od

Infirmary

Checks clothes with a green lamp and bones with her hands. She doesn’t care what twenty people saw; she cares what the cloth shows.

Dean Olv

Dean Olv

head of the Collegium

Left space in the council record for a second name. “Don’t argue with the council. Argue with the water.”

How the investigation works

01Follow the trailCrossing the campus costs time. You can’t see everyone before dawn.
02Gather threadsSome questions only open up after other discoveries.
03Prove your theoryAt the end you need a culprit, a motive and evidence.
